La Lande du Courégant

La Lande du Courégant

Restoring an exceptional natural heritage

Located right on the edge of a Natura 2000 area of more than 900 hectares, the Courégant moor is a fragile yet rich ecosystem, typical of Brittany’s coastal landscapes.
Left abandoned for decades, the site gradually lost its biodiversity, overrun by numerous invasive species.

With this in mind, the Town of Ploemeur launched a call for expressions of interest in 2022 to safeguard the Courégant moor.
In partnership with Bretagne Vivante and the CDC Biodiversité’s Nature 2050 program, we are working to restore the site’s natural balance, combining biodiversity, education and an agricultural project.

A new model for managing natural areas in France

To meet this challenge, a management plan for the Courégant moor was designed collectively, materialising in 2024 with the signing of a Real Environmental Obligation (ORE) between L’Asphodèle and the Town of Ploemeur.

It lists the parties’ mutual commitments under a management plan for this natural area, overseen by a dedicated monitoring and evaluation committee and funded notably by the site’s restaurant activity.

Concrete measures to restore the site

Since the ORE was signed, initial works have been carried out to create conditions for renewed biodiversity within the Courégant moor, such as :

  • De-paving 1,200 m² of former roadways
  • Removing large amounts of waste, wire mesh and concrete fences
  • Creating a pond to encourage the return of amphibian species and dragonflies in particular
  • Planting over 1,200 fruit and nectar-bearing plants in the hedgerows and biodiversity islands surrounding the plots (châtaigniers, merisiers, poiriers sauvages, sureaux noirs ou encore aubépines…)
  • Installing several beehives on site to support the pollination of the various species present, producing a richly flavoured honey

In parallel, the Bretagne Vivante association has for several months been conducting inventories and censuses of plant and animal species to concretely measure the impact of the actions carried out on the biodiversity of the Courégant moor.
